NASCAR has announced a new caution procedure to reduce downtime during races, aiming to provide fans with more green flag racing and action. This change, according to NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell, is a direct response to fan feedback following the Brickyard 400, where a half-hour-long caution period was criticized. The new rule will come into effect immediately before the NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway on August 10, 2026 (AEST).
The key innovation is that if a caution is issued with 10 laps to go in the stage, it will count as the stage break. The top 10 running order at that time will be determined using timing and scoring, ensuring a fair and efficient restart. When the leader crosses the start-finish line, they will display both the green-and-white checkered flag and the yellow caution flag.
O'Donnell emphasized the importance of this change, stating, 'Long periods of caution laps, not enough green flag racing. We heard you, we want to make a change.' This move aims to eliminate back-to-back cautions and elongated caution periods, which have been a source of frustration for fans. By speeding up the caution process, NASCAR hopes to enhance the overall racing experience.
